The songs of John Dowland have influenced compositions both for lute and voice since their creation in the 1600s. While these works have been scored countless times in myriad ways, their roots lie in the improvisatory nature of the Renaissance. With a fresh, modern turn of the improvisatory key, this project- aptly named The Pensive Heart- will attempt to open yet another door to the passion, melancholy, and fire represented by the words and music of this intrepid genius.
